Vacant seat controversy: Bagbin is hurting democracy – Afenyo-Markin

Afenyo

Leader of the NPP Caucus in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed his side’s dissatisfaction with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s recent actions on the vacant seat controversy.

The Speaker on Thursday, November 7 adjourned the House indefinitely for the second time owing to the NPP MPs absence in the Chamber.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 7 after the Speaker has adjourned Parliament indefinitely for the second time, Afenyo-Markin condemned the NDC for occupying the Majority side of the House.

He explained that per the Supreme Court’s ruling of the stay of execution of Bagbin’s declaration, the Speaker is expected to direct the NDC MPs to vacate the majority seats in the House.

Afenyo-Markin says the speaker’s action is contributing to what is the “chaos and confusion” caused by the NDC.

“One was expecting Mr. Speaker to direct the NDC MPs to do the right thing. Subsequently, the Council of State held meetings with the Speaker and the leaders of the House also held meetings with the Speaker.

“The understanding I had as a sequel from the meeting with Mr Speaker was to the effect that Mr Speaker to direct the NDC minority to sit at their right place which the left side of Mr Speaker, that was the understanding I had,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Afenyo-Markin further accused Bagbin of “supervising chaos” by the NDC MPs.

“What the Speaker did today amounts to chaos and bringing the reputation of democracy to disrepute…what Mr. Speaker is doing is hurting democracy.

“We the Majority NPP Caucus call on the Speaker once again to demonstrate statesmanship.”
