The United States Embassy in Ghana has reiterated its strict stance on illegal immigration, warning Ghanaians against engaging in unauthorized visa processes and unlawful entry into the U.S.

During a Consular Media Day held on May 9, 2025, the Embassy used the platform to caution the public while also offering clarity on the U.S. visa application process.

The event aimed to educate prospective travelers on legal procedures and improve transparency around consular services.

Consular General Elliot Fertik delivered a clear warning about the consequences of violating U.S. immigration laws:

The US has zero tolerance for illegal immigrants. Those who break the rules will face the law, including visa refusal, or upright ban from entering the US,” he stated.

According to Fertik, in 2024 alone, the Embassy received 61,000 visa applications from Ghanaians and issued 25,000 visas.

He also emphasized that while the U.S. remains open to Ghanaians interested in legal travel for education, work, or business, all applicants must adhere strictly to immigration laws.

We continue to welcome visitors from Ghana who are interested in studying, investing, or doing business in the US. But with entry to the US, visa applicants or holders must follow our laws,” he added.

“We also have the mandate of ensuring our borders are protected by protecting the US against illegal immigration by enforcing the laws,” he said.

The Consular General further assured that efforts are ongoing to enhance the customer experience, with a focus on transparency and accessibility in the visa application process.
