Upper East reg. tops in child marriage in Ghana

Official figures released on Child Marriages in Ghana have named the Upper East region as the highest with the most prevalent rate with 39.2%.

The region with the lowest rate is Greater Accra with 7.8%. The overall rate in Ghana stands at 12.2%. These were revealed at a two day workshop initiated by Our Lady of Mercy community services in partnership with Open Society of West Africa.

The workshop was organised under the theme: Curbing the incidence of Early Child Marriages and Teenage Pregnancies through information dissemination and education on women’s legal rights in Ghana.

In attendance were gender activists, women groups, queen mothers, girls from selected Senior High Schools and the police service who shared experiences and made inputs to the discussion.

Various speakers reiterated the need for parents to careful make their parental responsibilities a priority. They also cautioned girls and young ladies to desist from making the work of parents, teachers and guardians difficult.

A communiqué will soon be release on the way forward.
