Update on missing ECG containers: 13 arrested, 40 containers retrieved, manhunt underway

The number of arrests in connection with the missing Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) containers at Tema Port has risen to 13.

National Security operatives have confirmed that 12 Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation on Thursday, March 27, 2025.

The suspects, who were picked up from two aluminum smelting companies in Shai Hills, are believed to be linked to the illegal processing of stolen electrical cables.

Cables traced to the missing ECG consignment were found at a smelter owned by the Chinese, located opposite the Shai Hills Game Reserve. Investigators discovered that the cables were being melted down into aluminum bars for export.

Meanwhile, security agencies are on a manhunt for another Chinese national who is currently on the run. Authorities have vowed to track down all those involved in the syndicate.

Energy Minister John Jinapor earlier confirmed to TV3 that National Security had retrieved 40 of the missing containers from a warehouse in Kpone.

An Indian national, who owns the facility where the containers were found, has also been arrested. The suspect claims he legally purchased the containers last year, but investigations are ongoing to verify his statement.

The information I got this morning is that already they have traced about 40 containers to a particular terminal or warehouse in Kpone, which belongs to an Indian national. They have confiscated all the 40 containers and moved them to a secured location,” Jinapor stated.

The ECG container scandal has sparked national outrage after an investigative committee, led by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, revealed that while ECG records showed 2,491 uncleared containers at Tema Port, an independent audit found only 1,134—leaving 1,347 unaccounted for.

Authorities have assured the public that they will recover all missing containers and bring the perpetrators to justice.
