The police in the Ashanti region have arrested four people who were siphoning fuel from a tanker which had overturned at Oforikrom on Saturday.

Some residents in Oforikrom in the early hours of Saturday rushed onto a fuel tanker which had overturned with its content spilling onto the road.

The immediate cause of the accident was not known but no casualties were recorded. Some public transport drivers (trotro & taxi) carried various forms of containers to fetch what some considered as free fuel.

The act deemed as dangerous if there was any naked fire around went on for over an hour with the driver and his colleagues looking on helplessly.

This is not the first time a fuel tanker has overturned on major roads but the situation this time around has not caused any damage to life and property yet.

In 2008, more than 22 bodies were burnt beyond recognition when they were scooping petrol from a tanker which had been involved in an accident on the Techiman Kumasi road.

The police and National Fire service officers have arrived at the scene to prevent any further theft of the fuel and to get the fuel tanker moved away from the accident scene before it causes traffic.
