The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has condemned what it described as ‘brazen acts of violence’ at La-Bawaleshie in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election that caused injury to six people.
A statement issued by the UN development agency advised Ghanaians not to be complacent over the peace tag, which the country has been priding itself over.
“We strongly condemn such impunity and brazen acts of violence which undermine Ghana’s hard-earned democracy and peace,” it stated.
It wants Ghana to contribute towards protecting the peace of the country, and not relax on its oars because of the notion that Ghana is already a peaceful country.
“Ghana as a pillar of stability in the sub-region must not become complacent. We call on all to avoid violence and the use of inflammatory language that could further increase tension,” it said.
Some heavily armed masked men invaded Delali Kwasi Brempong’s house behind the La Bawaleshie Presbyterian Basic 1 School which was serving as a polling centre in the by-election.
Persons in the storey-building were said to have been ordered down and before they could comply, the armed men started shooting, injuring at least six persons who have since been treated and discharged.
The incident has received wide condemnation by the NDC, the NPP, security experts and other various stakeholders including CODEO and the NCCE.
The incident caused the National Democratic Congress to withdraw all their polling agents and electoral observers from the ground as it announced a pull-out from the by-election on the basis that the party could not guarantee the safety and security of their men.
