UK, US envoys hail Peace Pact by presidential candidates

The UK High Commission and the US Embassy in Accra have hailed the Peace Pact signed by the 2024 Presidential Candidates ahead of the general elections.

Engineered by the National Peace Council and the Institute of Democratic Governance, Ghana (IDEG), the candidates as well as heads of some key stakeholders committed to maintaining the peace in the country and signed a pact to boot.

A press release issued by the US Embassy in Accra on Friday, November 29 commended the candidates for their action, the 4th in the history of the country.

“The will of the Ghanaian people must not be thwarted by the threat of violence before, during, or after the upcoming elections,” the press release signed by Rolf A. Olson, the Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy, said.

It wished Ghanaians “a peaceful, transparent, and credible” elections while commending the Councol and IDEG for “their tireless stewardship of this important initiative”.

British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson, who was present at the event, called the gesture a “welcome step” in the electoral process.

“Like the Ghanaian people, the UK wants to see this country continue to flourish as a stable and successful example of democracy in the region and beyond,” she added.

“From parties and candidates to the Electoral Commission, policing and civil society, all those working to uphold Ghana’s democratic traditions can count on our full support,” she concluded, stating their expectation of “a credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful election on 7 December”.
