TUC urges calm over alleged plans to privatise Ghana Airports

The General Secretary of the Public Service Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged Ghanaians to be calm over the brouhaha at the Ghana Airport Company Limited. Mr. Bernard Adjei said with the new proposal being discussed, Ghanaians will have the opportunity to invest in the company. Workers of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) on Wednesday embarked on a demonstration to register their displeasure over government’s alleged plan to privatize the company. They claimed government, through the Aviation Ministry, intends to hand over the company to a Turkish investor and they cannot allow that to happen. At the protest outside the premises of the company, the workers clad in red attires and arm bands demanded a halt in the plans. They also invoked curses on those involved in the decision. This demonstration comes days after the Aviation Minister dismissed reports that the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) had been sold to a foreign entity. Reacting to the issue on Onua TV’s Maakye hosted by Bright Kwasi Asempa and Adwoa Konadu-Yiadom, Mr. Adjei said though the government is yet to sign the contract, workers believe it will not help the nation. Mr. Adjei said they are waiting for what the government will say and it can mean that Ghanaians would also get the opportunity to invest in the company. “We should be calm,” he urged on Thursday.
