The days where records of patients and case history existed in silos are no more – Bawumia on Nat’l E-Health Project

Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has commissioned the National E-Health Project, also known as the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS).

The LHIMS is an integrated Electronic Medical Record (EHR) system designed to deliver efficient and effective healthcare in the country with better outcomes for both patients and the facilities.

Dr Bawumia said that modalities for implementation began in 2017, and the project piloted in 2018. After approval in 2019, LHIMS is currently deployed in all 6 Teaching Hospitals, 10 Regional Hospitals, 243 Hospitals, 3 Psychiatric Hospitals, and 50 Polyclinics with over 1,000 health centres across all the 16 regions. Work is ongoing to deploy in the other Health Centres and CHPS Compounds across the country.

The impact of this project on health service delivery has been tremendous so far, he said after the launch on Wednesday October 30.

Prior to the deployment of LHIMS, he said, there were challenges with easy and timely access to patient’s health records, portability of patient records from service point to service point, legacy silo systems, inability to track and process revenue, manual process for NHIA claims submission and limited data for decision making at the various levels of health administration.

“The days where patient records and case history existed in silos are no longer with us. Happily, the day of the Folder is gone. Congratulations to the men and women at the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and Lightwave E-Healthcare Solution Ltd for the stellar job,” he wrote on Facebook.
