Sylvester Mensah has officially announced his candidature in the NDC flagbearership race
Former National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) boss and member of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sylvester Mensah, has officially declared his intention to contest the flagbearship race of the party. Mr. Mensah was one of the people whose names came up as having the intention to join the the presidential race after the party’s defeat in the 2016 general elections. Although he had spoken publicly on matters bordering on national interest, matters of the NDC and his future in the party, he had not made any official statement to the effect that he would run until Friday August 3, when he sent an official correspondence to the party declaring his intention. In his declaration, Mr. Mensah said he has done a broad consultation and he is convinced about the move. “Having engaged in a nation-wide consultation on the future leadership of our dear party, I am able to confirm that I would be contesting for the vacant position of flagbearer for our dear party, National Democratic Congress”, the letter under his signature reads. Mr. Mensah’s declaration comes a day after the party opened the gate for flagbearer hopefuls to formally declare their intentions to contest and consequently start campaigning. The General Secretary of the party, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah at a press briefing in Accra directed would-be aspirants to be mindful of what they say on the campaign platform so that they do not injure the overall interest of the party. Meanwhile, some political analysts, including Ben Ephson had predicted that  if former President  John Mahama joins the race it will limit the chances of Sylvester Mensah, Alban Bagbin, Spio-Garbrah, Prof. Alabi and other candidates who may be contesting. Ben Ephson particularly suggested that all other contenders consolidate their candidature if they want to beat John Mahama in the race. But Sylvester Mensah has said that the suggestion is one of the many available ways to win the race, though he believes there could be other plausible strategies. As yet, he is the only person who has officially written to the party declaring his intention. By editors.3news.com|Ghana
