Spio sues IGP, AG, National Security over Ayawaso by-election violence

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah
A National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has sued the Inspector General of Police, National Security and Attorney General over the recent violence that characterized the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. The defendant is seeking among other reliefs, a declaration that the National Security Ministry is held responsible for the violence at the by-election and an order for compensation for the victims. Mr. Spio-Gabrah is also seeking a declaration that the Police Service “did not resist the invasion of these unknown masked armed men, who stormed public polling station areas to create violence.” A shooting incident that occurred near the La Bawaleshie polling centre temporarily disrupted the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and resulted in at least 13 persons sustaining injuries. The government has subsequently set up a Commission of Inquiry to probe the incident, but many have suggested that the move is needless. Security Analyst, Dr. Kwesi Aning is one of the many individuals who described the move as unnecessary, saying it was a clear sign of the weak state institutions and agencies in the country. Dr. Anning said the commission’s investigation would yield no positive result if vigilante groups are not disbanded. Source:citinewsroom
