Some residents of Mepe in the North Tongu District have expressed fear following the announcement of spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority (VRA).
Manklalo of Mepe Traditional Area, Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, told TV3, the community is yet to recover from the harm caused them during the last spillage.
He said the Inter-ministerial Committee set up by the President after the spillage is yet to show any sign of work.
According to the Manklalo, Mepe is not ready for another spillage.
“We have sacrificed for the entire nation to get light, yet we have not been compensated. Most of our people contemplate committed. We are always encouraging them to have hope for things will soon get better. Things are yet to get back to normal and we are announcing another spillage?” he asked.
Apart from the Manklalo, an Assembly Member of Degorme Electoral Area and some community members, have described the announcements from VRA as pathetic.
On July 8, the Volta River Authority (VRA) announced its intention to engage relevant stakeholders of a potential spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.
This was contained in a notice signed by VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, Ing. Ken Arthur, to over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and all the assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas.
The notice indicated that VRA will follow up later with the dates and times for the engagement awaiting the possibility of spillage if necessary.
