The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has reported a minimum polling station turnout of 83% during the special voting exercise ahead of the general elections on December 7, 2024. This high turnout reflects the enthusiasm and commitment of the electorate to participate in the democratic process.
Addressing what she termed as her last engagement with the media before the election day, EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa expressed confidence in the preparations for the upcoming elections. She assured the public that the Commission does not anticipate any shortage of election materials and equipment in any part of the country. “We don’t anticipate any shortage in any part of the country,” she stated, emphasizing that all materials and equipment have been distributed to the regions in adequate quantities.
Mrs. Mensa highlighted that 18,774,159 registered voters, representing 55% of the total population, will be participating in the December 7 elections. She praised the success of the special voting exercise, noting the impressive voter turnout.
On media accreditation, Mrs. Mensa revealed that the Commission had provided accreditation to close to 10,000 media personnel, granting them access to polling stations, constituency, and regional collation centers. She urged journalists to use their platforms to inform citizens accurately and truthfully. “Rise to the task and cover elections accurately and truthfully,” she encouraged.
Regarding election observers, Mrs. Mensa mentioned that the Commission had accredited over 20,000 local and international observers. Additionally, these observers have been provided with maps to locate the various polling centers.
