Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has directed an immediate formal investigation to identify MP who made ‘daughter of a murderer’ comment during proceedings in Parliament last month.
During parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, February 4, a male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!” referring to the Klottey Korle MP, Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings while she was making a submission on the floor of the House.
Both the Majority Members and the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin have condemned the comment against Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings.
Following a request from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Speaker Bagbin to investigate the matter, the Speaker has ordered for an investigation to identify the MP who made the comment.
This development comes after the Volta Diaspora Caucus on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 petitioned the Speaker to investigate the matter.
Receiving a petition in Parliament from the Volta Diaspora Caucus who organised a protest on Tuesday demanding an apology from the MP responsible for the comment, Bagbin said a lot of work has been done and urged the member responsible to own up.
“I advise the member responsible to within the week to show honesty and plead than wait for outcome of investigations,” Alban Bagbin noted.
According to the Speaker, the member responsible when found “guilty of defamation… will be liable to be reprimanded or suspended for a period not exceeding 9 months or expelled from Parliament altogether.”
In an interview on February 10, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has said the party has not forsaken a comment made against late ex-President Rawlings and his daughter, Dr. Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings in Parliament.
Speaking on the matter in an interview on TV3’s New Day, Monday, February 10, the party’s general secretary said a formal letter has been written to the Speaker of Parliament to fish out who passed the comment which is believed to have come from the NPP side in the House.
“We have sent a message to the Speaker to find out who made the statement ‘daughter of a murderer’. We have not turned a blind eye,” he stated.
The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has also petitioned Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin to investigate what they deemed as “unsavoury” comment against the late ex-president.
In a petition dated February 4, 2025, the Rawlings Foundation expressed disappointment over the comment which they say was “inflammatory, despicable, unconscionable and disgraceful.”
The Foundation condemned the “toxic” and “untruthful” comments, describing them as “not only an indictment on Parliament but on the entire country.”
