The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the killing of a military officer in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The sad incident is said to have occurred in the wee hours of Saturday, March 4.

According to a press release issued by the military on Tuesday, March 7, the young soldier, Trooper Imoro Sherrif, was found in a pool of blood near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman.

“Trooper Sherrif, who was stationed in Sunyani, was in Accra on a Course and had sought permission to visit his parents at Ashaiman where he grew up, but was found in a pool of blood in the early hours of Saturday near the Amania Hotel in Ashaiman,” the press release signed by Brigadier-General Emmanuel Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations, said.

A swoop was subsequently conducted on Tuesday to fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime, leading to the arrest of 184 residents.

According to the military, 29 slabs and 57 mini-slabs of substances suspected to be Indian hemp were seized during the intelligence-led operation.

All the arrested, aged between 21 and 47, have been handed over to the police “for screening and for further action”.

But the action of the soldiers on Tuesday has been widely condemned.

GAF expressed regrets some innocent civilians suffered some distress during the swoop.

It, subsequently, clarified that the “swoop was not targeted at innocent civilians but was an intelligence-led operation conducted on suspected hideouts of criminals and crime-prone areas in the general area”.

“GAF however acknowledges that regrettably some innocent persons might have been caught up in the operation and consequently suffered some distress due to the location they found themselves at the time.”
