The ruling by the High Court in Accra on Thursday, March 12, declaring businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome free confirms the need for an amendment of the 1992 Constitution to have the Office of the Attorney General (AG) separate from the Ministry of Justice, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom says.
The Founder of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has been advocating a separation of the two offices.
According to him, a separation will shield the Office from “the negative effects of partisan politics”.
The appointment of a Minister of Justice by the president makes that person the Attorney General by the Constitution.
On his official Facebook page on Friday, a day after the ruling on Woyome, Dr Nduom suggested that an Independent Prosecutor can be appointed in place of the Attorney General if there are separate offices in order to save the country from losing millions of Cedis through judgement debts.
In pronouncing judgement on Thursday, High Court judge John Ajet-Nassam indicated that the state prosecutor provided little evidence to implicate Mr Woyome of any wrongdoing.
But many have ascribed politics to the posture of the state attorneys though the AG has assured that the judgement will be thoroughly studied for an action to be taken.
“We must all join in this and make it an all-inclusive crusade against corruption,” stated Dr Nduom.
