Residents of Dwenase resort to open defecation due to locked up toilet facility

An epidemic is looming in a mining community where the residents have resorted to indiscriminate defecation due to the lack of a toilet facility.

The residents of Dwenase in the Fanteakwa South District appear to have no option due to the failure of the local Assembly to open for use, a public toilet built 4 years ago.

As the rain sets in, the residents are frightened as they prevail on the Assembly to put the new facility into use to avoid a cholera outbreak.

A section of the residents speaking in an interview with Onua TV were livid at the situation and wondered why the new facility is still under lock.

Assembly Member for Dwenase electoral area, Benjamin Ansah Addo, has expressed fret over the situation, but he was quick to add that the Assembly has put in measures to put the facility into use.

He indicated that the Assembly is working hard to fix a plumbing challenge at the facility and once that is done, it will be made accessible to people.

Meanwhile, the Fanteakwa South District Chief Executive, Ernest Ofosu, in his response maintained the lavatory project has not been abandoned as speculated.

He however reiterated the assembly’s commitment to ensure there is a continuous water supply at the facility before opening it for use.

Yet, he was quick to blame the community for failing to present someone to the Assembly to manage the facility.

Mr. Ofosu revealed plans by the Assembly to engage a private company to manage the facility when the plumbing works are done.
