Rawlings defers stance on national cathedral for Catholic Church's

Former President Jerry John Rawlings says he has deferred his position on the construction of the national cathedral to support stance of his mother church, the Catholic Church on the matter. At a meeting with Trustees of the National Cathedral on Monday December 24, the former President said he is in support of whatever decision his church takes on the matter. Mr. Rawlings explained that while he has his personal opinion on the cathedral, the position of the Catholic Church of which he is a member, will be one he will respect. The delegation which was led by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams and included Archbishop Justice Akrofi and Dr. Joyce Aryee formally invited the former President to a fundraising event slated for the forecourt of the Black Star Square on December 28. Members of the delegation took turns to explain to the former President the need for the construction of the cathedral, conceding that the communication on the project had not been the best. Archbishop Duncan Williams informed the former President that every effort was being made to ensure that Ghanaians were well informed on the processes leading to the construction of the cathedral to stem the mixed reactions that had been created. In March this year, President Akufo-Addo unveiled the design towards the building of a Cathedral by his government. This announcement was greeted with criticism from sections of the public, who believe a Cathedral is not a thing to prioritize as a nation. Despite the criticisms, government is going ahead to build the Cathedral, and a fundraising ceremony slated to take place today is the first step towards building the Cathedral.
