The Minister of Power, Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General have been sued over the controversial AMERI deal, which has sparked public outcry on claims of it being a possible case of corruption.
Two leading members of the pressure group, Citizen Ghana Movement on Wednesday morning caused a motion to be issued at the Human Rights Court in Accra to among other things, seek an order for full disclosure on the deal that has brought into the country 10 gas turbines, which many experts say stinks and is not in the interest of the nation.
A Norwegian newspaper publication at the weekend revealed the 510 million-dollar deal was inflated by about 220 million dollars, and further claimed one Umar Farooq Zahoo, who is wanted for financial crimes in Norway and Switzerland and works with the company, was a party to the agreement.
The Power Ministry on Monday issued a statement to refute the claims in the publication and added that no monies have been paid to the company, noting that the agreement is on the basis of a Build, Operate and Transfer. The said statement, according to industry experts raised certain key questions than answers. There have since been back and forth as to the way forward in ensuring Ghana gets great value from the deal
But before the convesrsation could ceased, the two members of the pressure group, Sara Asafu Adjaye and John Stephen Bonful want the court to order the Power Minister, Dr. Kwabena Donkor to furnish them with a copy of the signed contract dated February 10, 2015.
They are further praying the court to order the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho to make available the minutes and/or the record of deliberations together with the Report of the Parliamentary Sub Committee on Mines and Energy on the agreement.
A statement issued Wednesday said the court action is “brought in the spirit of probity and accountability as well as in exercise of the civic responsibility to protect and preserve public property and expose and combat misuse and waste of public funds and property as enshrined in Article 41(f) of the Constitution.
“We wish to use this medium to call for support from all Ghanaians and civil society organizations concerning this suit. We welcome any positive collaboration with any individual and/or civil society organization as we collectively embark on demanding accountability from our leaders,” it added.
