An obviously elated Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said this when he was comfortably elected the NPP parliamentary candidate for the constituency over the weekend.
He says whiles they would be strategizing to retain the seat for the NPP by doubling the party’s margin, they are ultimately focused on ensuring that the party’s Presidential candidate heads to the Flagstaff House in 2017.
Kojo polled 219 votes to beat his closest contender, John Obiri-Yeboah, who managed 145 votes.
The third contender, Bright Acquah, managed a meager 40 votes out of a total 419 votes cast.
After his victory he said “I am elated, relieved, and humbled; it’s a mixture of feelings”.
The incumbent MP for Ofoasi-Ayirebi, David Oppong Kusi, who has been in Parliament on three occasions, decided not to contest the seat again after 2016.
The seat, which appears to be a safe one for the NPP, is thus expected to be retained by Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.
In the last election in 2012, the NPP stretched the margin by over 10,000 votes against the National Democratic Congress, NDC.
Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah told Accra-based Joy FM, that he won because of a strong campaign message.
“We focused on our campaign message and we chose not to be distracted by anything. We campaigned on what we called the five point plan for the constituency and that’s what we told the delegates, polling station by polling station; house to house; all day all night and we believe that the result we have received is a testimony to the work that we did”.
Kojo said expectations of him are huge but would work hard to deliver.
“The expectations are huge and the expectation is also because there are a lot of young people in the constituency who are traditionally despondent about the kind of politics we’ve had in this country. We hope to leverage on the various stakeholders to deliver on this expectation”.
“We have a major task which is to double the party’s margin in this constituency; it’s a very difficult job but it’s one that I believe that when I get everyone on-board we can pull our resources together and deliver on. That target is supposed to help us deliver President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to the Flagstaff House on January 7, 2017” he stated.
Meanwhile Nana Addo has congratulated Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah and welcomes him on-board.
The congratulatory message came in a tweet immediately after news of Kojo’s re-election went viral.
