The running mate to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Matthew Opoku Prepeh has said that the Bawumia campaign team cheerishes a relationship with traditional authorities.
Dr Opoku Prepeh said this after paying a courtesy call on the paramount chief of the Ada traditional area and President of the Ada Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty Djetse Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, on Wednesday, July 24.
In a Facebook post after the visit, the Mahyia South Lawmaker said “The Bawumia 2024 campaign continues to prioritise a deepened relationship between the political class and traditional authority.”
He added “I am grateful to the Regional Minister, NPP Greater Accra Regional Chairman, NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ada and the NPP executives in the Ada constituency for their immense support.”
Earlier, the flagbearer of the NPP Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said if he is voted for in this year’s election, his government would resource traditional leaders financially to enable them to support the government in developing the country.
He noted that if the chiefs are not financially resourced they can’t do the work that is expected of them.
During a meeting with members of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, as part of his three-day tour of the region which started on Monday, June 10, Dr Bawumia said “I want to amend section 63 (D) of the Chieftaincy Act to empower the chiefs to help the government to govern this country.
“It will help all of us. We need to empower the chiefs to help the government and empowering the chiefs is not only to change the law.
“So my manifesto team has looked at all of it. We are saying that we have to pay living allowances to the paramount chiefs and not stop there but to the divisional chiefs and the queen mothers so that we can have a complete chieftaincy institution that is empowered to help government,” he stated.
