Speaker Bagbin urges new MPs to prioritise constituents’ needs

Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, Alban S.K Bagbin.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to remain dedicated to addressing the pressing concerns of their constituents and the nation.

Speaking during an orientation session for first-time MPs, Speaker Bagbin emphasised the profound responsibility lawmakers carry to honour the sacrifices of their constituents.

He highlighted the unwavering support many citizens have shown, even risking their lives to defend their representatives.

You are a role model. The lives of so many people depend on you. Don’t fail them. This is what touches my heart,” he said.

As you go around, you recollect how people are fighting for you, not just during the elections, but even today in the villages, defending you with their lives. And you are here taking it easy and toying with their future.”

Bagbin stressed the moral obligation MPs have to act in the best interest of those who have entrusted them with power, warning against complacency.

It is not fair at all, and the Almighty God himself will not bless you. Because you don’t need that blessing. And it is true. Whatever you sow, you reap it. So don’t think that you do good for any other person. You do it for yourself,” he added.

The Speaker urged MPs to view their roles as an opportunity to create meaningful change for their constituents, reiterating that their actions today will shape the nation’s future.
