NPP man wants new ‘standard’ to CID invitations

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has asked the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to clarify invitations given to persons it wants to interrogate. He said without such clarifications, these persons seem to flout police rules with impunity. This suggestion comes in the wake of singing and chanting at the headquarters of the CID on Monday by National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials, who escorted the party’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, to the place. Mr Ofosu Ampofo had gone to the CID headquarters upon invitation last Thursday over a secret recording said to have been from an address he made to party communication officers at a meeting. The NDC has since tagged the recording as doctored. On Monday when Mr Ofosu Ampofo honoured the invitation, NDC Members of Parliament, regional and national executives as well as former government functionaries accompanied him, aside his lawyers. They chanted and sang to charge the CID headquarters but were later hushed by the Deputy Director-General of CID, ACP George Tweneboah. Some party supporters also massed up in front of the CID office to show solidarity. Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday, Mr Ahiagbah said the CID must state in its invitations the number of people who can accompany invitees. He suggested that even the number of lawyers who accompany persons under investigations must be restricted. “That should be the standard going forward,” he stressed. Mr Ofosu Ampofo was on Monday granted a GH¢400,000 bail with two sureties and directed to report on Thursday, March 7. By Emmanuel Kwame Amoh|editors.3news.com|Ghana
