NDC to consider making Rawlings’ birthday a holiday at the party level

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and family of former President Jerry John Rawlings have laid wreaths in his honour to mark four years of his demise.

The party says it is considering making his birthday a holiday.

Tuesday 12 November 2024, marks exactly four years when the former President Rawlings passed at the Korlebu Teaching hospital after a short undisclosed ailment.

His demise occurred less than a month after he buried her biological mother, Victoria Agbotui.

Party members, supporters and family members converged on the headquarters of the National Democratic Congress at Adabraka to lay wreaths to commemorate his demise.

Three wreaths were laid on behalf of the family, the party and the NDC cadres corps who supported the formation of the party.

At the solemn observation ceremony, Special Assistant to the Speaker of Parliament and a member of the NDC cadres, Kofi Attoh said moves have been initiated to make the birthday of Jerry John Railings a holiday at the party level.

He said, “we need to do more to recognize him.”

He said “we need to have a day preferably his birthday as a holiday for the party to celebrate him,” adding that a proposal has been made to the National Executive Committee of the party for consideration.

Mr Attoh further stated that NEC will consider the proposal in January as the first item when the NDC comes to power.

MP for Buem, Kofi Adams, eulogised the former President who happens to be his former boss for his selfless dedication to governance and leadership. He impressed upon members not to forget about his virtues when the party successfully stages a comeback to power.

Daughter of the late former president, Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings who is also the MP for Korle Klottey believes his father will be displeased at the rate at which the country’s water bodies, and forest reserves bequeathed to the current administration have been destroyed.

She said, “we should be celebrating today, but how can we do that when the very things he stood for are being destroyed in our face?”

She noted that as we go about campaigning and convincing people to vote for us, others are telling us not to come and do business as usual because it is not usual anymore. “The late President will not be happy if he happens to be alive today to see how our water bodies and forest reserves have been destroyed,” Ms Rawlings noted.

The late former President Jerry John Rawlings was the longest serving President in the history of Ghana and the first President in the country’s fourth republican dispensation.
