The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of National Vice Chairperson Dr Sherry Hanny Ayittey.

Sherry Ayittey, as she was popularly known, died on Saturday, July 22 as announced by the head of the Akwetey Nantan family of Osu Alata, Nii Kofi Ayittey.

In a statement to commiserate with the family, friends and supporters, National Chairman of the NDC Johnson Asiedu Nketia described her as “hardworking and selfless”.

He stated that the party has been robbed of yet another elder “whose sterling contributions to nation building span well over a generation in the history of Ghana”.

“We in the NDC are particularly devastated by this sudden and unexpected blow, and at the
appropriate time, we shall demonstrate our gratitude to her for her love of nation and party.”

Sherry Ayittey served in the NDC government led by the late Professor John Atta Mills from 2009 to 2012 as the Minister of Science, Environment and Technology.

She also served under John Dramani Mahama as Minister of Health and later Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

After the NDC left government in 2016, she contested the National Vice Chairperson seat two years later and won.

“We console ourselves and her family and request for strength and fortitude for her family and friends as preparations are made towards her funeral,” Mr Asiedu Nketia’s statement on Saturday concluded.

Details of the funeral will be announced by the family in due course.
