Former President John Dramani Mahama arrived in Sefwi Bekwai on Saturday to begin a five-day campaign tour of the Western Region, a statement from his campaign team has said. The immediate past president is expected to visit all 26 constituencies in the Region. But his first stop is the Bibiani Constituency. Mr Mahama is seeking to lead the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the third time into a presidential election. His first attempt in 2012 was successful but he failed in his second, in 2016. The party will go to the polls this month to elect its flagbearer for the 2020 elections. Though there are seven party stalwarts who have submitted forms to be flagbearer, their vetting was suspended following an interlocutory injunction secured by two members of the party.
Nonetheless, Mr Mahama appears to be in pole position. He has already met delegates in the Central, Upper East, Upper West, Northern, Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and Greater Accra regions.
