The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has put a positive spin on the numeral 8 that was picked by the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Fifi Kwetey during the balloting for positions on the ballot paper for the December 7 presidential election.
Mr Bagbin believes that the 8 is a symbol of great fortune for the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
He posted on his Facebook page thus, “8 is excellence. Don’t break it. Choose it!”

Speaker Bagbin’s post on September 21, comes after the NDC representatives at the balloting session organised by the Electoral Commission on September 20, picked 8 for John Mahama.
During that exercise, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) representatives picked the numeral 1 for their flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
All along, the NPP has been touting the mantra ‘Break the 8’, a quest to stop the eight- year cycle of governance between them and the NDC. According to the NPP, the 2024 election will mark a break away from that convention, meaning they will hold power for 16 years or more.
