The youth according to reports, expected the president to name Salaga as the regional capital. Seven persons were subsequently arrested, and some youth later besieged the Police station Wednesday morning to demand the release of the arrested persons, issuing a nine-hour ultimatum to the Police. Speaking on the issue later in the day at the Jubilee House in Accra, Mr. Botwe described the incident as uncalled for. He noted that the overlord of the Gonjaland had met all paramount chiefs within the area, and a consensus was reached for a campaign towards having Damongo as the capital, hence the people of Salaga had no point in setting fire to the NPP office to register their disagreement. “After the referendum, on the 12th of January, the overlord of Gonjaland kingdom met all paramount chiefs, opinion leaders and his campaign team at the Damongo SHS Assembly Hall. “He therefore said that now that they have finished the campaign, they were dissolving all the campaign structures. At the that meeting on his own, he requested that all members of his kingdom support Damongo to become the regional capital, and that he was going to send a petition to Mr. President,” the Minister explained. He said it was thus surprising that the Salaga youth will go ahead to exhibit such lawlessness. The Minister called for perpetrators of the crime to be brought to book. “We condemn this.
