The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, says the embattled Director-General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, George Alex Mensah, is gunning for the parliamentary seat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bekwai Constituency.
He added that COP Alex Mensah’s posters are even out.
Sammy Gyamfi made this allegation on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM on Saturday, September 9.
He was speaking on the appearance before the seven-member bi-partisan committee of witnesses, key among them some three senior police officers.
The NDC executive said the committee is only entertaining “gross insubordination” from the police officers, whom he said ought to be punished severely.
For him, the police should not have suspended a decision to interdict the three senior officers – George Alex Mensah, a Commissioner of Police (COP), Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, a Superintendent, and George Lysander Asare, another Superintendent.
He said they are “rabid members” of the NPP, particularly the seniormost COP Alex Mensah.
“I am sick to the stomach that till date, the [Ghana] Police Service is sitting aloof, watching these deviant characters come and sit on television and display their irresponsibility, their recklessness, their evil-mindedness, their unprofessionalism and they are looking at them because everybody is afraid if you touch them.
“These are rabid NPP fanatics,” he stressed, citing COP Alex Mensah as “even gunning for the Bekwai Parliamentary seat of the New Patriotic Party”.
“You’ve not seen his posters?” he dared when questioned on the allegation.
COP Alex Mensah admitted in evidence when he appeared before the seven-member committee that he has been a long-standing member of the United Party (UP) tradition and sympathetic towards the NPP.
“But I am not a card-bearing member,” he clarified his membership of the NPP.
But Sammy Gyamfi stressed: “If you touch him, you will incur the wrath of Akufo-Addo.”
