Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament who brandished papers on which were written ‘Bloody Widow’ in protest of the swearing-in of the new Member for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency have been referred to the Privileges Committee. First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu gave the ruling after the Minority refused to apologise over the gesture. In boycotting Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s swearing-in on Tuesday, some members on the Minority side showcased sheets to register their protest. This has attracted condemnation from several quarters including the Majority Women Caucus.

In refusing to apologise, the Minority leadership said individual MPs showcased the papers and that that gesture was not a unanimous decision. As a result, Mr Osei-Owusu, who is also MP for Bekwai Constituency, asked the clerk of Parliament to furnish him with video materials on Tuesday’s proceedings in order to single out the culprit MPs to face the Committee. ‘Hypocrisy’ Meanwhile, he ordered MP for Tamale North Constituency Alhassan Suhuyini out of the House after he passed some comments during Wednesday’s proceedings. An angry Suhuyini disagreed with the Speaker’s decision to order him out of the House, describing it to journalists as “hypocrisy”. He said he will not be perturbed by the decision. “I will continue to stand up for what is right, to speak my mind, and to defend what I think is unfair and if I get shot or get killed, I will join Ahmed Suale in the grave gladly.” Source: editors.3news.com|Ghana
