President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has congratulated the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for winning the Assin North by-election on Tuesday, June 27.

He said the outcome only further strengthened Ghana’s democratic credentials by the conduct of it.

The NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson, whose dual citizenship brouhaha occasioned the by-election, won decisively by 57.56 percent.

He beat his contenders from the President’s own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

On Wednesday, June 28, President Akufo-Addo stated: “I congratulate the National Democratic Congress on its victory yesterday.”

He also congratulated the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) and its Chairperson “for a job well-done”.

“The security services are to be commended for maintaining law and order during the holding of the elections; as is the media for providing extensive coverage before, during and after the elections.”

He urged his party’s supporters not to despair but rather keep their heads up given the possible outcomes of loss or victory in elections.

President Akufo-Addo urged all of them that “we live to fight another day”.

“We once held the Assin North seat, and I am confident that, sooner rather than later, Assin North will be blue again,” he assured.
