The Accra Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has met officers to be deployed for Wednesday’s demonstration by Organised Labour.

The public sector workers are set for protest marches at regional capitals with the Accra edition slated to begin at the Obra Spot and end at the Black Star Square.

Speaking to the officers to be deployed on Wednesday, Accra Regional Police Commander Dr George Akuffo Dampare said: “We urge you to go out there to shine and be professional and avoid anything that will bring disgrace to the Service.”

The Commissioner of Police indicated that besides protecting demonstrators “to ensure that they undertake their constitutional mandate”, the officers will also protect life and property especially “people who do not have anything to do with the demonstration but happen to be at the place”.

He warned the organisers to stick to the agreed routes of the march.

The demonstration by Organised Labour is to press home demands for reduction in the recent utility tariff hikes and a total withdrawal of the Energy Sector Levy Act.
