Photos: Mahama assures judiciary of cooperation

President John Mahama has dismissed claims that his government harbours animosity towards the judiciary, stating that his administration remains committed to the rule of law and justice.

Speaking at a meeting with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) on Wednesday, March 26, the President acknowledged past criticisms of judicial appointments but reassured the legal fraternity that his government respects their role in upholding democracy.

On our side of the political divide, there is this perception that we have a problem with the legal fraternity. If you look at the kind of people in my government (including Marietta), we are not people who hold animosity against the judiciary and legal fraternity,” President John Mahama.

Then-candidate Mahama had previously criticized the past administration for allegedly packing the courts with party loyalists, a move he believed could compromise the integrity of the legal system.

However, he emphasized that his government seeks to strengthen cooperation with the judiciary rather than undermine it.

The President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey, welcomed the dialogue, stressing the Bar’s commitment to promoting the rule of law and justice in national affairs.

Efua Ghartey, GBA President

As a country and as a Bar, we are guided by the rule of law. We are eager to ensure total obedience to it and to guarantee justice in areas such as security, governance, and national development,” Efua Ghartey, GBA President.

Mahama’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about judicial independence and fairness in Ghana’s legal system.
