Sixty-eight persons have been rounded up for allegedly engaging in illegal mining at Mpohor District of the Western Region. The suspects, who were picked up during a Tuesday dawn swoop by a joint Immigration-Police team, includes nationals of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Togo. Our correspondent Heyrow Henry Eliud Yankey reports that “presently they are being screened at the Regional Immigration head office in Sekondi”. The team found on them pickaxes, shovels, mobile phones and bags. Sources say the suspects will be transported to Accra after the initial screening for further checks to be done on the immigrants and possibly repatriate them to their home countries.
