Three passengers in a saloon car have burnt beyond recognition in a grisly accident on the Yapei Bridge in the Savannah Region. A tipper truck heading towards Damongo collided head on with the saloon car from the opposite direction Wednesday afternoon just about 20 metres to the bridge, triggering and burst into flames, an eyewitness told editors.3news.com Driver of the truck and his ‘loading boys’ however managed to escape. “Very pathetic; All those in the saloon car burned to ashes…Unfortunately, those in the saloon car could not escape,” a student of the University of Ghana, Akologo Listowell, who witnessed the accident told editors.3news.com a while ago. It is unclear what caused the two vehicles to collide. Commuters who met the accident looked helpless as thick smoke covered the area while both vehicles burn to ashes.
For 30 minutes, there was a gridlock, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at both sides of the bridge as no vehicle was able to cross either side. Though the police and military personnel from Yapei arrived at the scene, they could were handicap in salvaging the situation and had to wait for personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service to arrive. According to the witness, the vehilces were total burnt when the fire service personnel from Buipe arrived at the scene. They, however, cleared the road to allow traffic to flow from both ends of the bridge.
