Parliament approves GHS 3.2bn for Roads Ministry to fund recruitment and projects

Parliament has approved GHS 3.2 billion for the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the 2025 fiscal year, with funds expected to support infrastructure projects and staff recruitment.

As part of the budget, the Ghana Highway Authority will recruit 137 staff to fill gaps created by the establishment of new regions and regional offices under the Ministry’s decentralisation efforts.

The Ministry is also set to dualize and enhance safety on major trunk roads across the country, while continuing work on the four bypasses along the Accra-Kumasi Highway at Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo.

However, during the concluding debate on the 2025 budget, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin strongly criticised the government’s financial plan, describing it as uninspiring and lacking private sector support.

He argued that the budget is filled with contradictions and stifles business growth, stating, “It is the reason why they are unable to tell us a single initiative for the private sector. I ask a question: What is the work of the Trade Minister? They say they have an adviser for the 24-Hour Economy. What is his work?”

For the past two weeks, lawmakers have debated the budget statement, with Parliament expected to pass the Appropriation Act by Friday.

The Minority’s concerns over economic policy direction and government expenditure remain central to the discussions.
