Open defecation in Ashaiman to soon end – MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ashaiman, Albert Boakye Okyere says more than 5,000 residents within the Ashaiman municipality have received domestic toilets through the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA).

The project which is aimed at increasing access to improved sanitation and improved water supply in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area is assisting residents within the Ashaiman municipality to own their toilets at a reduced cost.

Speaking at the commemoration of world toilet day, the MCE of the Ashaiman municipal assembly, Albert Boakye Okyere says initiatives such as GAMA and punishing landlord who rent their homes without a toilet facility have helped to greatly reduce open defecation in the municipality.

He said through the assembly’s collaboration with Safi Sana, a fecal to energy processing plant, the sanitary conditions in Ashaiman has significantly improved. Safi sana treat fecal and organic waste as raw material to produce energy and compost for farming.

For his part francis owusu, a finance and administrative manager at safi sana, called for a change in public perception about fecal matter. He added that fecal matter is valuable resource that can produce economic gains.

World toilet day is marked globally on November 19, the day is set aside to stress the necessity of toilets in our lives. The theme for 2021 is “valueing toilets”. Safi sana embarked on a sensitization program and tree planting program to mark the day.
