A devastating explosion at shops dealing in mining explosives in Odumase, near Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, has claimed one life and left several others injured, including firefighters.
The fire reportedly broke out in one of the shops selling dynamites and other explosives used by local miners, triggering a powerful blast that damaged buildings and sent shockwaves through the area.
The explosion, which occurred just meters away from a fuel station, raised further safety concerns.
Authorities have confirmed the death of a resident who attempted to warn firefighters about the looming danger.
“He was trying to warn the firefighters to back off, but before he could escape, the explosion occurred. He was severely injured, and I’ve been told he has passed,” said Divisional Officer Grade 2 Joe Bryden, the Asante Akyem Central Municipal Fire Commander, in an interview with Luv FM.
Several people sustained injuries, with victims rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among the injured were two firefighters, one of whom collapsed after the fire tender he was operating was caught in the impact of the explosion.
The explosion left parts of the area in ruins, with multiple buildings suffering severe structural damage. Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the casualties and destruction as investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.
This tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with the storage and sale of mining explosives in populated areas.
Residents and officials are calling for stricter safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
