Okyeman Youth petition Bagbin over alleged derogatory remarks against J.B Danquah

The Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman has officially petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, over alleged “derogatory” remarks against the late Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, a key figure in Ghana’s independence struggle.

According to them, the comment was allegedly made by MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed who they say referred to Dr JB Danquah as a traitor and a CIA operative. The Coalition regards the MP’s comments as a distortion of historical facts and disrespectful to the legacy of the late J.B Danquah..

Clad in red and black, the youth protesting over the comment submitted a petition to the Speaker on Friday, March 7, 2025.

In their petition, the group’s convenor, Akomaning Yeboah, urged the Speaker to compel the MP to retract his statement and issue a formal apology on the floor of Parliament.

They are also demanding a removal of the remarks from the official parliamentary records, emphasizing that such historical misrepresentations undermine national unity and dishonor the memory of Dr. Danquah.

“The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Muhammad, made false and denigrating remarks about JB Danquah. He contributed immensely to Ghana’s development. We want the Speaker to ensure he retracts his statement and apologizes to the family and Ghanaians,” he said.

Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djetror who received the petition assured the group that the House will address their concerns.

“We want to assure you that Parliament remains responsive to the needs and concerns of the public. In due course, the matter will be addressed,” he stated.
