New Patriotic Party’s Gifty Twum-Ampofo has won the by-election held on Tuesday, March 29 in the Abuakwa North Constituency of the Eastern Region.

NPP’s candidate polled 10,033 votes to beat her two contenders namely Isaac Kwarteng of the United Front Party (UFP) and Samuel Frimpong of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

The by-election had been occasioned by the murder of Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu at his Accra residence on February 9.

Major political parties including the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) had scratched their candidates from contesting for various reasons, key among which is commiseration with relatives of the deceased member of parliament (MP).

The by-election was characterized by low turnout at the polling stations, our correspondent says, but security was tight.

Madam Twum-Ampofo’s votes represented 89.6 per cent of the total valid votes cast.

With 901 votes representing 8.05 per cent, Mr Kwarteng of the UFP placed second while Mr Frimpong came third with 263 votes representing 2.35 per cent.
