NPP MPs stage walk out after Speaker Bagbin declares 4 seats vacant

The Majority Members of Parliament staged a walk out on Thursday, October 17 after Speaker Alban Bagbin declared four seats vacants.

The seats declared vacant are the Agona West constituency in the Central Region, Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, currently an independent MP for the Fomena constituency in the Ashanti Region and the Amenfi Central seat.

The NPP MPs walked out after the Majority Leader, Afenyo-Markin was unable to make a submission to challenge the Speaker’s ruling.

“We as majority caucus are boycotting parliament untill the matter is determined by the supreme court,” he stated.

The former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu had petitioned the Speaker to declare the seats vacant by invoking Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution which stipulates that a lawmaker must vacate their seat if they leave the party under which they were elected or attempt to remain in Parliament as an independent candidate.
