The Electoral Commission says it has not registered any political party in the country this year to contest the 2016 General Elections.
It has consequently advised those who have applied to be registered as a political party to desist from soliciting for votes until the party has been issued with a final registration certificate.
Reports surfaced Sunday that former Presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention, Hassan Ayariga, has formed a new political party on whose ticket he intends to contest the 2016 Presidential Elections.
Posters of Dr Ayariga’s new party, All People’s Party [APC] and membership forms for interested people leaked Sunday morning on social media. APC has a broom as its emblem with green, white and yellow as the colours.
But a statement issued by the EC and signed by Christian Owusu-Parry, said the Commission has not registered any political party for it to start soliciting for votes.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that contrary to reports in the media, the Commission has not registered any political party this year,” it said.
The Commission said those who apply for registration of political parties have to meet some requirements before they are issued with a final registration certificate.
It said until that, “the party seeking registration cannot conduct its activities as a political party.
“The Commission is accordingly advising and reminding applicants that it is against the provisions of Act 574 to canvass for votes until the party has been issued with a final registration certificate.
It has thus asked all political actors and the public to be guided by the laws.
