The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) of attempting to usurp the powers of the Electoral Commission over calls for a credible voters’ register.
The Institute had written to all political parties to participate in a debate scheduled for Tuesday, October 20 on positions regarding concerns raised by the largest opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), that the current voters’ register is flawed.
But in a statement issued prior to the debate, the NDC said its position on the claims has already been communicated to the EC.
It said no other body apart from the EC has the mandate to oversee electoral issues.
“It is very surprising that the IEA, is organising this debate after it was part of a decision that was taken by the, Ghana Political Parties Programme (GPPP), that the EC should be in-charge of this matter,” the statement signed by General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia said.
“The IEA is attempting to usurp, or compete with the EC over the Voters Register issue; which is unacceptable.”
The debate, however, took place with former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye arguing for a new voters’ register while a fellow at IEA, Dr Ransford Gyampoh, arguing against the call.
