Ghana Health Service has said that the number of MPOX cases in the country remains two.
These are the mother and her son who were confirmed to have contracted the disease some weeks back.
‘‘Well, we only had two cases. A mother and son and so far, we haven’t had any more cases.” He said during a press briefing on October 30.
Following the declaration of the highly infectious disease MPOX by the WHO as a public health emergency in Africa in August, more than 17,000 cases have been confirmed across the continent with the Democratic Republic of Congo accounting for 96 per cent of all cases in Africa.
The United Kingdom is the latest country to confirm a case today, Wednesday October 30.
The outbreak comes as a new strain is identified, named Clade 1b, said to be spreading mainly through sexual networks.
The WHO says it has been identified in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda and all countries that have never reported cases of MPOX before.
Ghana reported its first case in August identifying 25 contacts. Following the confirmation, the mother of the first case also tested positive bringing the country’s case count to two (2).
Following the confirmation, the GHS heightened surveillance across Ghana’s 16 regions in the bid to detect cases early.
Among modes of transmission, sexual contact is the most commonly reported cases, followed by person-to-person non-sexual contact.
