The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has taken its demolition spree further to Accra’s area of Circle, where several illegal structures line the streets especially near the railway line.

Bulldozers on Sunday pulled down most of these structures, some of which are on the banks of the Odaw River.

Recent demolition by the Assembly at Old Fadama, popularly known as Sodom and Gomorrah, sparked a demonstration by residents, who marched to the State House – in the process vandalizing property.

Given the frequency of floods this rainy season, the Assembly led by its Chief Executive Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije has resolved to rid the country’s capital of illegal structures especially those blocking the passage of the Odaw River.

Residents looked on helplessly as their structures were pulled down on Sunday, July 12.
