He said on TV3’s Hot Issues last Saturday that given the opportunity, he would want to own the judiciary which has in the last few months grabbed headlines over allegations of corruption involving judges and court officials.
“One business I would want to own, if it is possible, is the judiciary and I could make business out of that,” he revealed, but could not get the opportunity to explain why as the programme ended.
But in a latest interview with TV3, Mr Amoabeng justified his statement noting that making a business out of the judiciary is something that that could improve efficiency, generate revenue for the state and at the same time reward its staff.
“I think it can be done, not necessarily by me. It can be done in the sense that the judiciary has top quality people by way of judges, learned people as they have physical structures as in buildings,” he said.
He said if properly run Ghana’s judiciary could generate huge revenue for the State through fines and levies, adding “I think we have to look at this as a revenue generating, profit making venture”.
He has thus propose what appears to be like a commission system where judges and staff of the courts are given a percentage of revenues from all cases they deal with; something he argued discourage delays in cases, corruption and motivate staff.
“If we should institute measures where judges or the courts are rewarded or take a percentage of cases that they resolve….you can have an institution that is dedicated to delivering justice in time and making monies and getting rewarded appropriately and the state will be better off. That’s where I’m coming from,” he proposed
