Mahama Ayariga condemns military brutalities in Bawku, calls for accountability and justice

The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the military brutalities inflicted on civilians in parts of Bawku Municipality on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

He described the actions of the military as unacceptable, vowing to demand total accountability from security forces involved.

While expressing regret over the killing of a military personnel by an unknown gunman, Ayariga insisted that ransacking homes, beating innocent civilians, and holding the town hostage was equally detestable.

“The rule of law must prevail. Soldiers who are responsible for ensuring law and order should never act this way,” he stated.

Ayariga urged the leadership of Bawku and the military to work together to investigate the killing of the soldier rather than resorting to reprisals against civilians.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased soldier and sympathized with the victims of the military’s actions. He also expressed disappointment that the military command ignored his earlier appeal not to react violently, instead proceeding with a heavy-handed approach.

“We need to work together,” the MP emphasized, calling for calm and cooperation to restore peace in the conflict-prone area.

The Majority Leader also expressed hope in the leadership of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, to help bring an end to the violence in Bawku.

“I have confidence that all sides will repose trust in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring finality to the situation in Bawku,” he stated.

The Bawku conflict, which has seen intermittent violence over the years, remains a key security concern in Ghana.
