Limited voter registration proceeding well – Jean Mensa

The Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, says the ongoing limited voter registration exercise is proceeding steadily.

The Commission, she insists, is satisfied with the exercise so far.

Mrs Mensa made this known on Monday, September 18 when she addressed journalists after a week of the exercise.

She conceded that there were disruptions in the very beginning but “we quickly moved to resolve these issues to ensure unhindered and seamless process”.

“I am happy to note that the registration exercise is proceeding well,” she said.

The exercise began on Tuesday, September 12 and scheduled to end on Monday, October 2.

Weekends have been included to see electoral officers registering first-time voters at the EC’s district offices.

But the exercise has been met with stiff resistance from some political parties and civil society organisations.

They had complained that the exercise is likely to disenfranchise many Ghanaians as a result of the centers at the district offices of the EC.

They had called for the exercise to be conducted, rather, at electoral areas to get it closer to the first-time voters.

But Mrs Mensa assured that officers are on the ground and working around the clock to ensure that deserving Ghanaians register to vote with ease.

“It is not in our interest to disenfranchise anybody.”
