KMA embarks on decongestion exercise

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, has vowed to sustain an exercise to rid the streets of petty traders. The Assembly says measures have been put in place to ensure traders comply with directives under the decongestion exercise. The renewed drive by KMA to ease vehicular and human within the central business district of Kumasi was carried out Monday morning. The task force of the Assembly cleared unauthorized structures along some pavements at Adum to decongest the area. The presence of the traders along the shoulders of the road made it difficult for vehicles and humans to move freely. The Assembly started relocating the traders to the Race Course market and other satellite markets in the metropolis to ease congestion. Public Relations Officer for KMA Godwin Okumah Nyame said measures have been put in place to ensure that the evicted traders do not come back on the streets. “We are ready to enforce the by-laws to make sure that this decongestion exercise is sustainable. The Race Course market facilities and other satellite market facilities have all been improved so there is no excuse from any trader not to relocate.” He added that the Assembly will punish any trader who flouts the directive according to its by-laws. “Whoever is found back on the shoulders of the streets to conduct his/her trading activities will be dealt with according to the laws of the assembly.”
