Public Relations Officer for the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Naa Ayele Sakyere has expressed disappointment in majority Members of Parliament for not joining the demo against the sale of SSNIT hotels.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM Sunrise, Wednesday, June 19, Naa Ayele contended that the Majority MP’s should have joined the demo to demonstrate their support to protect state assets.
“I wished that NPP members too were on the ground to show that this is about Ghana. It’s a shame for me that they are not there…issues like these which are national issues we must all rise to the occasion and so for me I am disappointed,” she said.
She applauded the minority MP’s who joined the demonstration with concern for national issues and Okudzeto Ablakwa’s resilience to protect the state’s asset.
According to her, TUC remains resolute to fight against the sale of SSNIT hotels to protect worker’s interest.
She said organized labour has been against the decision to sell SSNIT hotels from the initial stages in 2018 when the matter was presented before the SSNIT board of which organized labour is a member.
“The four representatives of Organised labour on the SSNIT board, they tell us from 2018, immediately this issue was tabled, we said you cannot sell these hotels.
“So, if they have been able to withstand this until where we are now and they realise that these processes are being hastened…this is about Ghana and all workers and I am excited Okudzeto is leading this,” she added.
Lead Convener for the ‘Hands off our Hotels’ demo, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa led protesters on Tuesday, June 18 to present a petition to President Akufo-Addo to take action against the sale of the SSNIT hotels.
Although the demonstration was marred with a bit of destruction after Police assaulted some protesters with pepper spray, the Deputy Chief of Staff eventually received the petition awaiting a response and further action from the President.
